Lekha Reporters—Profiles

Students will be introduced to various forms of journalistic writing, which will be included in a culminating class newsletter or magazine. Students will learn how to conduct interviews and write profiles.

Lekha Reporters—Opinions

Students will learn to write various forms of journalistic writing, which will be included in a culminating class newsletter or magazine. Students will learn how to conduct interviews, establish criteria for reviews, as well as conduct research for feature articles.

Literary Analysis

The purpose of literary analysis is to break down parts of literature into its components and to evaluate a piece of writing in order to explain it better. The ability to analyze literature is useful for anyone that wishes to be part of the academic or professional world. This week students will analyze different types of literature—stories, poems, plays, and essays and will learn how to evaluate them.

Narrative Essay Writing

Students will learn to write the narrative essay, which focuses on developing a student’s ability to write in the first person and to follow a linear narrative structure. Students will write three to five paragraph essay, which is the structure favored by school teachers. They also will learn how to plan and outline their essays properly before writing, as well as how to revise their essays.

Narrative Essay—Personal Statement

Every narrative essay gives the writer a chance to showcase their life experiences and beliefs with readers. A personal statement requires the writer to think critically about their experiences and reflect upon themselves. In this class, the student will learn how to include insights about their abilities and strengths in an essay format that focuses upon personal growth. These essays are particularly important for students applying to institutions of higher learning.

Novel Writing

A novel is a long fictional piece of writing. Students in this class will be introduced to different styles of writing. They will be taught to stick with an idea for an extended period of time in order to help create a longer piece of work. Critical reviews and peer reviews will be part of this class, which will help students work towards a perfect book.

Open Mike

An open mic is a live show where audience members stand up to perform at the microphone. This class is a natural transition to our poetry and songwriting class.
