Appreciating Writing

In our foundation course students will learn proper grammar, sentence structure, and paragraph structure as they write original stories. Art will be used to enhance the joy of storytelling. Children will take home a portfolio of completed work at the end of the session.

Blogging

A blog is a medium which publishes frequent content in reverse chronological order. Blog posts contain opinion, personal experience, creative writing, shared links, and more. In this class, students will be taught the principles of blogging and engagement with their readers.

Lekha Reporters—Profiles

Students will be introduced to various forms of journalistic writing, which will be included in a culminating class newsletter or magazine. Students will learn how to conduct interviews and write profiles.

Lekha Reporters—Opinions

Students will learn to write various forms of journalistic writing, which will be included in a culminating class newsletter or magazine. Students will learn how to conduct interviews, establish criteria for reviews, as well as conduct research for feature articles.

Open Mike

An open mic is a live show where audience members stand up to perform at the microphone. This class is a natural transition to our poetry and songwriting class.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is the process of giving a lecture to a group of people in a structured manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain the audience. Public speaking helps in boosting self-esteem and in critical thinking skills. In this class, students will to write and different types of speeches and the correct method of delivery.

Speech and Debate

Students will learn and practice basic research methods to find and develop presentation or speech topics. They will learn the basic elements of speech and presentation, which include an understanding of audience and rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos). They will also learn the rules of debate.

The Art of Storytelling

The gift of storytelling may be one of life’s most powerful and envied skills. A young storyteller learns to let go of inhibitions and gains confidence to talk in front of an audience while having fun. Participants will learn the art of narration using different storytelling techniques like Puppet Theater, shadow puppets, play acting, and mime. They will take home the story telling tools that they create during the week.
