Academic Writing

Students will learn the art of writing essays. Depending on their grade level they will write three and five-paragraph essays as required by most schools. In addition to planning and outlining their essays, students will learn how to write appropriate topic sentences and powerful thesis statements will be discussed. Older students will write their essays using Modern Language Association (MLA) format.

Academic Writing for the Common Core

Students will learn the art of writing essays according to the Common Core State Standards. Depending on their grade level they will write three and five-paragraph essays as required by most schools. Appreciating Writing

In our foundation course students will learn proper grammar, sentence structure, and paragraph structure as they write original stories. Art will be used to enhance the joy of storytelling. Children will take home a portfolio of completed work at the end of the session.

Argumentative Essay

Students will learn to write the argumentative essay, which focuses on developing a student’s ability to support a stated opinion using well made arguments. Students will write three to five paragraph essays, which is the structure favored by school teachers. Students will acquaint themselves with the various types of writing as required by the common core curriculum as they learn how to use facts in their papers and explain their topic concisely and clearly. Students will begin to learn how to research material for their essays

Book Reports

Students will read works of fiction and non-fiction and learn how to present the analysis coherently to an audience.

College Entrance Essays

Experienced teachers will guide students in the art of writing essays for college entrance.

Create-a-Book and Early Reading

Reading is the process of decoding symbols in order to help comprehend a written language. Early Reading students will learn how to read using interactive phonics methods. The art of bookmaking and illustrating books will be an additional focus of the program. While creating books of different types of books, students will infuse their stories with descriptive language, creating vibrant pictures in the reader’s mind.

Descriptive & Expository Essay

The focus of this week is on learning the art of infor ming the reader and describing the topic of choice. Students will acquaint themselves with the essay, learning how to use facts in their papers and explain their topic concisely and clearly. Students will begin to learn how to research material for their essays.

Early Reading

Reading is the process of decoding symbols in order to help comprehend a written language. The reading process requires continuous practice, development, and refinement. At Lekha Early Readers children will learn how to read using interactive phonics methods.

Early Writing

Children will learn the art of correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar through interactive lessons. Composition will be introduced to older students through paragraph structure.
